Hard to believe but there was once a spontaneous moment of joy between the diminutive engineering chief Paddy Lowe and the vivacious Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

At the ’08 season finale the former McLaren man had been tyre-spotting on the Interlagos pitwall and decided, with half a lap to go, to disappear. As he squirmed through the sea of joyous Ferrari mechanics he looked up at a giant TV screen to see Hamilton pass Glock at the final corner. The next thing he saw was Nicole dancing in the pitlane: “We were the first two people running the right way and realising the same thing,” said a breathless Paddy of Lewis’s title success.
