Force India boss, Mallya, arrested in London

You can run, it seems, but you can’t hide…not from the Metropolitan Police in London who have just arrested Force India team boss, Vijay Mallya.

Mallya is sought by the Indian government for unpaid debts related to his Kingfisher airlines back in 2012 and has been in the UK for over a year now only attending the British Grand Prix last year. Extradition was sought by the Indian government on February 8 and it seems the UK authorities have complied.

‘Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Extradition Unit have this morning, Tuesday 18 April arrested a man on an extradition warrant.

‘Vijay Mallya, 61 (18/12/1955), was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud.

‘He was arrested after attending a central London police station, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today, 18 April.’

The UK has a formal process that must be followed including a court appearance for a preliminary hearing followed by an extradition hearing before any action can be taken by the secretary of state. The Indian government believes it has a strong case against Mallya but he tweeted a different opinion.

“Usual Indian media hype. Extradition hearing in Court started today as expected.” Mallya said via Twitter.
