Max Verstappen is the new Nigel Mansell

At the end of last season, I was trying to recall which previous Formula 1 drivers Max Verstappen reminded me of. It’s one of those things you do when you witness a current driver and search the database in your head of who they remind you of. Certainly Lewis Hamilton reminds folks of Ayrton Senna in some respects and Sebastian Vettel may remind others of Michael Schumacher.

I contemplated Max’s father, Jos, and while he was aggressive, Max doesn’t have his style per se. I would say that there are shades of Schumacher in him but perhaps Gilles Villeneuve is a bit closer for me. Regardless of what I think, one of his bosses reckons he is most like Nigel Mansell.

“But the way he drove the car did remind me of Nigel’s driving style.”. said Red Bull chief brain Adrian Newey.

“What was dramatic about Mansell was that you always knew it was him in the car.

“He had an almost metaphoric elbows out driving style.”

Now, I’ll acquiesce here as Adrian knows both drivers and was there to witness it and perhaps I can see that comparison as well.

“It’s very reminiscent of Nigel,” said Newey.

“It’s that sort of ‘I’m not going to be bullied, I’m going to do my thing and if you don’t like it it’s your problem’ approach.”

Maybe he’s a hybrid of a couple of drivers or maybe, just maybe, he’s Max Verstappen and he’s cutting his own cloth and making his own style that folks in the future will compare young drivers to? Imagine that.
