McLaren made its Formula 1 debut at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1966 under the leadership of Bruce McLaren. Over the next 50 years, McLaren has become one of the most successful F1 teams in history. The team has won 20 World Championships and secured 182 Grand Prix victories. To celebrate this special milestone, we have partnered with international lifestyle brand New Era to bring to our supporters an exciting range of heritage headwear.
This collaboration is built around the history of McLaren’s 50 years of racing. Throughout this new and exciting range, we use heritage colours, authentic materials and themes that reflect McLaren’s racing pedigree.
The product range
We are releasing a range of five new cap designs, each available in curved and flat peak styles. These products are vibrant, stylish and commemorate the racing heritage of McLaren. Although the products are inspired by the past, McLaren’s young and hugely talented 2016 reserve driver – Stoffel Vandoorne – has modelled the range of headwear complemented by some similarly retro T-shirts.
All new products use 100% vintage leather in honour of our heritage, and reflect on the very start of our journey, when a young Bruce McLaren ingeniously renovated the Austin Ulster and used a leather strap to secure the bonnet.
Denim has been used in certain products in this collection, echoing the materials of the mechanics’ overalls from our early days. Added to this, the waxed canvas product was inspired by the toolkit bags used by mechanics to carry tools.
At the core of the collection are premium workwear materials based around melton wool, denim, leather and waxed canvas – the latter of which has been dyed rocket red, the official McLaren red taken from the iconic branding of the time.
All new products feature the premium logo application synonymous with New Era. A mixture of screen-printed and direct embroidery make up the main logos on the crown.
