McLaren will topple Mercedes

I’m all for optimism. Especially when it comes to McLaren and setting goals. The next goal? World champions.

Team boss Ron Dennis has always been optimistic about his team and so he should be but he feels that McLaren, not Ferrari, will be the team to un-seat Mercedes at the top of Formula 1’s heap. Ron told BBC:

“I honestly believe that the next world champions after Mercedes will be McLaren,” Dennis told the BBC. “We’ll get to that goal before other people.

“It is challenging but I have a firm belief in the technical competence of our people and a firm belief in Honda.”

The pixie dust in this from rags-to-riches story? The 2017 regulation changes:

“The 2017 regulations level the playing field and it is enough time for us to catch up with Honda, so I think we’ll have a good chance next year,”

Fair enough, now we know why McLaren were lobbying so hard for the changes. It’s the time Ron feels will allow his team and Honda to catch up. Surely Ferrari feel the same? We’ll see, Ron, we’ll see.

Perhaps no love lost between Merc and McLaren as Ron had the rug pulled out from underneath him with Mercedes moving to Brawn GP and away from the venerable Woking-based team back in 2009. Ron would probably like to beat Mercedes at their own game.
