Mercedes walk-back Lauda’s comments; Lewis didn’t ‘lie’

I didn’t think Mercedes were going to like the commentary that came yesterday regarding Niki Lauda on Lewis Hamilton’s actions.

Lauda had told Servus TV that Lewis lied about how good his relationship with Nico is and also destroyed his driver room in the Mercedes motorhome. Now Mercedes has walked that back on behalf of Lauda saying:

“Lewis Hamilton did not in any way damage a hotel room or his private driver room at the circuit during the race weekend in Baku; and

“Lewis Hamilton did not lie about his relationship with team-mate Nico Rosberg.

“Niki regrets any misunderstanding caused by comments that have been blown wildly out of proportion compared with the casual context in which they were made.”

So Lewis didn’t lie or do anything to his room but this release seems to blame overblown commentary in a casual context. I said yesterday, no surprise, that Mercedes and Toto Wolff would not be happy with Niki’s comments. Niki can be rather blunt in his commentary and that doesn’t actually fit the Mercedes milieu very well so walking back his commentary on Lewis isn’t surprising.
