I suggested recently that Suaber would be the team most likely to pick up Audi staff from the defunct WEC programme and it seems that this process will be accelerated with the news, leaked out in Germany, that Jorg Zander is about to become the technical director of Sauber. He is curretly technical director at Audi and the timing suggests that he was probably going to leave Audi before the announcement was made about WEC. This would not be a great surprise as the project was widning down in the face of opposition from Toyota and Porsche and the impending arrival of Peugeot (which has not yet been announced). Zander has been around F1 for a long time, having started working in racing in 1990 with various different roles in rallying, touring cars and then GTs. He joined the F1 world in 1999 with Toyota as head of chassis and hydraulic engineering in 1999. In 2002 he moved to BAR-Honda to become chief engineer for mechanics and transmission and in September 2005 was appointed head of design at Williams Grand Prix. That was short-lived and in 2006 he moved to BMW Sauber. He then went to Honda Racing F1 in 2007 and stayed on when the team became Brawn, but departed six months later. There ere talks about a role with HRT but Zander decided to join Audi instead and has been with the firm since 2015. He is the latest in a string of new recruits at Hinwil, including chief aerodynamicist Nicolas Hennel de Beaupreau, strategist Ruth Buscombeand chief race engineer Xevi Pujolar. More engineers are expected to follow.
